I have stayed in a few hotels in my time and my requirements and expectations of them have changed over the years. Wherever you think about my travel in Australia or China or India, you should expect to be able to get a decent hotel at a decent price, but sadly that is not always the case.
Looking back at some of the places I have stayed in I wonder how I ever made it back alive. Like some of the dubious hotels I stayed at in the former Soviet Union where I had to barricade the door due to the constant knockings on the door all night. Or the luxury hotel in Kuwait that strangely had no lock on the doors which led to the balcony – which was on the ground floor!
Then again I have stayed in some fabulous hotels such as the iconic Fairmont in San Francisco and the opulent Four Seasons in Sharm-El-Sheikh. Gorgeous hotels, and I am glad that I got to experience them.
Nowadays I tend to go for tried and tested hotels and I must admit I often visit chain hotels, the reason being that you know what you are getting. Give me a kettle and an iron, a decent TV and Wi-Fi and I am happy. I no longer care about luxury hotels, just decent rooms with a decent bed for a decent night's sleep!
